Originally I was going to go to bed early on election night and wake up in the morning to find out who had won, but my impatience won out. I wanted to watch the results, and, lacking a TV and wanting some company, Joel and I joined Karen at one of the local restaurant/bars to watch the electoral votes come in.

I am so glad that the election results were decisive and that it is over. We stayed up until McCain and Obama gave their speeches. I found tears running down my face during Obama’s speech. What a great night for our country!

On my way home, I found my thoughts drifting to my Grandma Rosa. Rosa was a woman my mother befriended right after we moved to Fairfax, VA. She was the grandma I saw almost every week as I grew up (biological grandparents lived in MN and IA). Rosa lived to be over 100 years old, but passed away when I was in high school.

During her lifetime, she saw an incredible amount of change, but if we’d told her that a black man would be elected president in 2008, I don’t think she would have believed us. Well Grandma Rosa, guess what?
