Packing for India

I’ve decided to do the entire month-long trip with only a carry-on bag and a camera bag. My reasoning is that if I can pack for a week at conferences in a carry-on bag (which I can), then there’s no reason I can’t pack for a month (if you consider that I can wash clothes every week). The secret? The Eagle Creek double-sided packing cube. I can literally fit 90% of my clothing in this soft-sided cube, leaving the other half of the suitcase for toiletries, rechargers, a towel, a pair of shoes, and stuff that I buy. I managed to adjust my camera bag to hold the little Aspire One minicomputer we are taking on the trip. Did I manage to fit all the stuff in the bags? Yup. What did I forget? Stars aligned – India it is…

1. Joel got the vacation time.2. American Airlines found us seats with our frequent flyer miles (2+ hours on the phone) – Joel flies in and out of Kochi, I fly in to Kochi and out of Delhi.3. Availability for the trips we wanted (that turned out to be trickier than expected).4. Housesitter for the time we are both gone (thanks Sally!) We are doing the Southern India trip for two weeks together, and then Joel will fly home. I will continue on to Delhi to spend two weeks in northern India – and the really great part is that my cousin Leah is going to join me for those two weeks! So I will have company for the whole trip! Yay! Southern India includes Kochi, Periyar National Park, Madurai, the Sri Meenakshi Temple, the Ghandi Museum, Pondicherry, Mamallapuram, Mysore Palace, a safari at Bandipur National Park, and the Nilgiri mountains. Northern India includes Delhi, Agra (home of the Taj Mahal), Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary, Jaipur, Castle Bijaipur, and Pushkar. It was a tough choice for Joel – but he favors the eclectic over the crowds, so he chose, as I predicted, the southern trip. We leave mid-January. Is it India?

Now that I know I’m not going to TED, I want to go plan to go somewhere in December/January because we normally cannot travel during that time period. Since my sabbatical is January through April (really, through August since I’m not teaching next summer), I want to make sure we go somewhere that we normally don’t go because the June-August season is too hot! If the stars all align properly: Joel can get the vacation time, we can book the frequent flyer tickets, and the space is still available on the trips we want, it looks like we might go to India – Joel for two weeks, and me possibly for four. Since you all came with on my last vacation (to eastern Europe), you might want to go check out where we may go this year and lobby for one trip over another – to do this, go to the Intrepid Travel website and do a trip search for trip codes HKS, HST, HSC, HSS, and HKR. The only downside of this trip is that I will have to get that darned Yellow Fever shot again (I passed out the last time). Stay tuned for updates and cross your fingers that this works out!
